Ghana Puts Task-force in Place to Tighten Internal Controls

Dec 6, 2006 5:17 PM   By Jeff Miller

RAPAPORT...  Ghana inaugurated a nine-member Kimberley Process (KP) Certification Oversight Committee to ensure that no conflict diamonds would cross the nation's borders the Ghana News Agency reported.

Ghana has been accused of allowing Cote d'Ivoire diamonds to enter the country for export with KP certificates. Ghana was given three months to implement directives decided upon at the KP Plenary in Botswana in early November.

Dominic Kweku Fobih, minister of lands, forestry, and mines, said the taskforce would ensure full implementation of an action plan meant to strengthen Ghana's internal controls to prevent conflict diamonds from being exported.

"The taskforce will be expected to propose strategies that will help to improve on the scheme's implementation in Ghana," Fobih told Ghana News Agency.
