RAPAPORT... South Africa’s Red Cross Air Mercy Service (AMS) in the Northern Cape town of Kimberley has received an $865,408 (R6.1 million) donation from De Beers. The donation will be used for upgrading AMS aircraft medical equipment and to cover part of the costs of facilities in Kimberley, reported Sapa news agency.

In 2006, AMS undertook 7,000 flights, which provided emergency medical care to thousands of residents of the Northern Cape. AMS CEO John Stone said that with the money received, AMS hopes to reach “even more people” than ever before.

The donation is aimed at ensuring widespread access to routine health care and emergency medical assistance to residents of the town, according to De Beers fund manager Kate Maurel.

Maurel said that the "support is a continuance of De Beers' community investments stretching back decades and, as a home of diamonds, it is especially meaningful that this money will be devoted to Kimberley."
