RAPAPORT... The leadership of both the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the Diamond Manufacturers & Importers Association (DMIA) met recently to discuss the alleged irregularities in GIA's grading of diamonds in what became known as the GIA bribery scandal.
Message to DMIA Membership
The DMIA and the leadership of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) met recently to discuss alleged improprieties concerning the lab’s grading of diamonds, the investigation conducted by DLA Piper and the results of the investigation that were handed over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Attending the meeting on behalf of the GIA were Ralph Destino, Chairman, Donna Baker, President, Tom Moses, Senior Vice President, and Peter R. Zeidenberg of DLA Piper. Mr. Zeidenberg (see dlapiper.com for profile), was introduced as the replacement for Thomas F. O’Neil III, who is leaving DLA Piper for an outside opportunity.
The discussions were comprehensive, frank, and detailed. The leadership of the GIA conveyed their commitment to do everything within their means to insure the integrity of the grading process and their grading reports. Additionally, they assured the DMIA that all of the results of the internal investigation conducted by DLA Piper had been handed over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and that they continue to review and transmit any new information as it emerges.
The DMIA stressed the need for the GIA to be proactive in its approach to these matters, and that it is in the best interest of the GIA and the diamond community for there to be appropriate closure to this matter. The GIA and the DMIA jointly encourage anyone with information concerning this case to contact the GIA, the DMIA, or the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The DMIA appreciates the GIA’s openness in these discussions and is committed to its continuing dialogue with the GIA.
