Calcutta Jewellers Expecting Growth During Downturn

RAPAPORT... Art of Jewellery: Jewelry companies in Calcutta are riding out the current downturn in the industry, bolstered by their decision not to shift from handcrafted manufacturing to technology-based machinery manufacturing.

The fact that the 22-karat handcrafted jewelry from Calcutta is mainly exported to the Middle East and Gulf regions rather than to the U.S. has meant that there has been no negative impact on its demand.

There seems to be expected growth this year for Caluctta-based jewelers. This was reiterated by Pankaj Parekh, eastern region chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). "Last year, the total exports from Calcutta were worth INR 20 billion ($412.88 million), and we are looking at a growth this year," he said.
