RAPAPORT... The Second Gemological Research Conference, which was scheduled for August 21–23, 2009 in San Diego, California, has been postponed due to the "serious downturn in the global economy," according to a statement released by conference host the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
“Taking this action is especially difficult considering the enthusiasm and synergy that so many people have contributed to the planning of the event,” said Brendan Laurs a co-chair of the conference. “However, the success of the conference is dependent on attracting participants from diverse backgrounds and geographic areas, and the current economic climate has created significant budget and travel restrictions for many. Thus, GIA believes it is in everyone’s best interest to hold the conference at a more favorable time.”
