RAPAPORT... Haagen-Dazs and jewelry designer Alex Woo have teamed up to raise awareness about the plight facing honey bees. The ice cream brand has sponsored a television special on the subject, titled "Disappearing Act — A World Without Bees," which will air November 14 on PBS. Haagen-Dazs has also donated funds to be used for research on colony collapse disorder, a term that references the potential factors contributing to the abrupt and thus far unexplained disappearance of entire bee colonies.
Woo created a special line of bee-shaped pendants in silver, gold and white gold, with some featuring diamonds. Ten percent of the sale proceeds from Woo's bee pendants will be also donated to fund research on colony collapse disorder. Price points for the silver bee pendant start at $148. The special edition Little Bee (pictured), set in 14-karat yellow gold with diamonds, was listed at $828.
According to her website, Woo joined Haagen-Dazs’ "Help the Honey Bees" campaign because the bees face the serious danger of extinction. Woo includes a Haagen-Dazs gift certificate for a free carton of ice cream with every bee pendant purchase.
