RAPAPORT... Online retailer Overstock.com concluded that 49 percent of its customers selected earrings as the most desired gift for Valentine's Day in a recent survey. However, more shoppers planned to buy a necklace as their jewelry gift of choice, the company found. Overstock also determined that ''surprisingly, engagement rings are less in demand this year,'' with only 8 percent of respondents designating an engagement ring as their gift choice. Overstock's survey revealed that 31 percent of respondents planned to spend between $50 and $99 on Valentine's Day related gifts, while 28 percent would splurge on gifts that cost between $100 and $299. Nearly nine in 10 gift recipients would be a spouse or partner and the survey revealed 46 percent intend to buy gifts for their children. Greeting cards and chocolate were the favorite non-jewelry Valentines gift this year, according to the retailer's survey.
