Press Release: In 1947, after surviving the horrors of WWII, Polish immigrant Harry Kotlar arrived in the United States with his family and very little else. Moving from New York to Los Angeles a year later, he started his diamond business by taking stones, cut by his brother-in-law, and selling door-to-door to jewelry manufacturers and retailers and building sales and relationships based on trust and integrity.

Kotlar worked hard, was careful in business and the fledgling company prospered and grew. With the business expanding, his daughter Betty joined the firm in 1959 and brought her husband, Louis Wiener, on board in 1964 at which time he learned the diamond business at Harry’s side. Throughout the years the family built an impressive inventory and strong relationships in the early years of the Los Angeles Jewelry District. As the diamond and jewelry industry evolved, so did Harry Kotlar & Company, gradually shifting the firm’s focus from smaller accent diamonds to larger stones of exquisite quality and a branded line of handcrafted jewelry.

Harry’s grandson David Wiener now heads up the firm. Under his watch, Harry Kotlar & Company introduced the Kotlar Cushion®, a 61-facet cushion cut diamond with a unique facet array of his design. This proprietary cut is marketed as “The World’s Most Brilliant Cushion Cut Diamond,” and is only available from Harry Kotlar & Company.

Other innovations introduced by the firm's third generation president, include offering hand-crafted jewels and semi-mounts in addition to loose diamonds. Many Harry Kotlar fine jewels feature artisan pavé – a design hand-carved into the metal that secures melée in a sculpted setting Harry Kotlar & Company diamonds and jewels are exhibited at both the Couture Show and the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair and are sold by some of the most exclusive jewelers in the United States. The company supports its retail partners with customizable advertising programs, developed in partnership with the retailer.

David now has a young son and looks forward to the day when a fourth generation will become involved and eventually lead his great-grandfather’s company forward.
