RAPAPORT... The United Nations (UN) reported another rebel attack in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as violence again becomes of great concern to the peace process, following the defeat of the M23 group one month ago.
The latest attack took place on January 14 when Mayi Mayi Sheka fighters attacked Pinga in the North Kivu province. The fighters retreated following a half hour of gun fighting with the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), the UN peacekeeping force in the DRC, MONUSCO reported.
According to the UN, over 1,000 civilians sought refuge at the UN's mission base in Pinga during the battle. The UN's special representative for the DRC, Martin Kobler, noted that peace in eastern DRC will only be achieved if its root causes are addressed and rebel fighters can be reintegrated.
