RAPAPORT... Gem Diamonds recovered a 162.06-carat, type II diamond (pictured) and a 161.74-carat, type I diamond from the Letšeng mine in Lesotho at the end of January.

Both diamonds were  mostly undamaged in the extraction process, which verifies that measures implemented at Letšeng by Gem Diamonds to reduce diamond breakage are proving successful, the company concluded.

The diamonds are expected to achieve top prices at the company's February tender.

In October 2013, Gem Diamonds sold an 82-carat  diamond for $4.8 million or $59,173 per carat, while a rare 12.47-carat, blue diamond set a record for a Letšeng diamond and fetched $7.5 million or $603,047 per carat.
