RAPAPORT... Mwana Africa, a multi-commodity mining and development company, reported that diamond production at its Klipspringer slimes retreatment project in South Africa more than doubled to 12,383 carats during the fourth quarter that ended on March 31. The project achieved an average price of $21 per carat during the period.

The company treated 16,000 tonnes of fine residue tailings at an average grade of 77.4 carats per hundred tonnes from the old Marsfontein mine through the plant. Work began at the project in October 2013.

The company noted that it made a number of process changes at the plant during the period, including screening improvements and the installation of a dense media separation surge bin.

Following these changes and with the onset of dry weather conditions, a substantial increase in throughput is expected and  a significant contribution to monthly care and maintenance costs during the next quarter, the company stated.

Management continues to evaluate and review options to re-open underground operations along the Leopard fissure.

Mwana owns a 65 percent stake in the project with the remaining interest held by black economic empowerment partner Naka Diamond Mining Ltd.
