RAPAPORT... ALROSA began mining ore at the Botuobinskaya kimberlite in the Republic of Sahka, Yakutia the company reported.

The pipe is expected to produce 1 million carats out of 230,000 tonnes of ore in 2015, with production set to exceed 2 million carats once the deposit reaches its design capacity of 400,000 tonnes of ore per year.

Botuobinskaya is an open-pit mine and forms part of the company's Nyurba Mining and Processing Division (MPD). The pipe will compensate for a production decrease at the Nyurbinskaya pipe and ensure that Nyurba MPD maintains stable output of 7.5 million carats per year.

Ilya Ryashchin, ALROSA's acting president, explained that the company has invested a large amount of funds in building new production capacities over the past few years. Between 2013 and 2014, the company's capital expenditure on pre-production mine development amounted to $49.2 million (RUB 3 billion).

"The newly commissioned Botuobinskaya pipe is the first new pipe in Yakutia over the last 10 years. The development of this deposit is included in ALROSA’s long term development strategy which envisages an increase of diamond production to 41 million carats through-putting into operation of new pipes,” Ryaschin said at the official commissioning ceremony.

As of January 2015, Botuobinskaya reserves totaled 93.021 million carats with an average diamond grade of 5.65 carats per tonne, according to the Russian ore reserves classification system. The pipe's indicated resources under JORC standards amounted to 13.679 million tonnes of ore with an average diamond grade of 5.19 carats per tonne or  reserves of 71.04 million carats.
