RAPAPORT... Sotheby's will auction a platinum and diamond necklace
created for Queen Nazli of Egypt, estimated at $3.6 million to $4.6 million, in
New York next month.
The bib-style piece set with 217 carats of diamonds in a
‘sunburst’ motif was created by Van Cleef & Arpels after Queen Nazli
commissioned it for the wedding ceremony of her daughter Princess Fawzia in
1939, Sotheby’s said.
The item is one of several pieces of jewelry estimated at
over $1 million among more than 500 lots up for auction on December 9.
Others include an exceptional platinum, Kashmir sapphire and
diamond ring valued at $3.5 million to $4.5 million that had been in the
possession of three generations of the family of financier Thomas Fortune Ryan;
a platinum and diamond ring estimated at $3.5 million to $4.5 million set with
a square emerald-cut, 38.27-carat, D, VVS2, type-IIa diamond from the estate of
an Italian countess; a pair of emerald and diamond earrings with 22.97-carat
and 21.37-carat Colombian emeralds known as the ‘Stars of Muzo’ valued at $1.8
million to $2.2 million; and a pair of platinum, diamond and sapphire earrings
estimated at $1.65 million to $1.85 million with cushion-cut, 29.39-carat and
28.03-carat L, VS2 diamonds.
The lots also include a pair of white gold, chalcedony,
sapphire and diamond Couronne cuff bracelets, valued at $400,000 to $600,000,
and a platinum, white gold, chalcedony, sapphire and diamond ‘flower-head’ necklace
estimated at $350,000 to $550,000. Both were designed in around 1935 by Suzanna
Belperron for Wallis Simpson, later the Duchess of Windsor for whom England’s King
Edward VIII gave up the throne.
“The rare
combination of superb original design with romantic provenance is irresistible
to lovers of fine jewels, and we are thrilled to present them to collectors
this December,” said Lisa Hubbard, co-chairman of Sotheby’s jewelry
division for North and South America.
Sotheby’s
sold $18.4 million of diamonds at a two-day auction in New York in September, with an
emerald-cut
diamond ring weighing 30.15 carats going for $2.6 million.
