RAPAPORT... ALROSA’s rough diamond sales jumped an estimated 16 percent in value terms during the first quarter.

The miner reported it sold “at least” $1.3 billion worth of rough in the three months to March 31, compared with $1.1 billion a year earlier, according to Rapaport News estimates. Sales by volume surged 34 percent to 12.1 million carats.

Gem-quality rough diamonds fetched on average $146 per carat, the Russia-based miner reported.

Meanwhile, the company reduced first-quarter production by 2.3 percent to 8.2 million carats, in line with its stated strategy to reduce inventory that was accumulated last year.
