Crime-catchers from around the world have gathered in The Hague this week to increase international cooperation in what is described as the first global law enforcement forum on the illicit diamond trade.

Europol, the European Law Enforcement Agency based in the Dutch capital, is hosting the three-day conference that started Tuesday. The event brings together senior law enforcement and customs officials, regulatory bodies, anti-money laundering experts and private sector experts with a stake in combating the illicit trade and trafficking.

“This forum is a crucial step forward in our mission to disrupt the criminal activity that touches not just the U.S. but the entire world,” said Stephen Richardson, assistant director for the criminal investigative division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The congress will provide a platform for sharing information and networking, the FBI said. It will also help build law enforcement partnerships that will lead to the identification, dismantling and disruption of criminal networks associated with the illicit trade in diamonds.
