RAPAPORT... Lucapa Diamond Company said it started commissioning of XRT processing technology modules that enable discovery of supersized stones at its Lulo mine in Angola.

The machinery, with larger, 55 millimeter screens, provides capacity to produce rough diamonds weighing up to 1,100 carats. It is also more efficient at recovering low-luminescing type-IIa diamonds, Lucapa said.

The miner’s record discovery from the Lulo mine to date was the 404-carat ‘4th February Stone,’ which it sold for $16 million. The new XRT stream will be used to process a stockpile of about 19,000 bulk cubic meters of oversize material that has been amassed by Lulo mining company Sociedade Mineira Do Lulo since February.
