RAPAPORT... Tiffany & Co. was forced to abandon its annual holiday window unveiling because of protests against President-Elect Donald Trump in front of the neighboring Trump Tower.
The iconic ceremony, in which the flagship New
York store façade is lit up with lavish festive decorations, was cancelled on
Monday as thousands of protesters gathered outside Trump’s corporate headquarters
on Fifth Avenue.
“The event was to take place outdoors across Fifth Avenue,
which was no longer possible,” Nathan Strauss, Tiffany’s director of corporate
communications, said in an email to Rapaport News. While the ceremony
was cancelled, the window display is on show as usual, Strauss pointed out.
“We remain open for business and welcome customers to enter
the store via our 57th Street entrance while any barricades along
Fifth Avenue are in place,” Strauss added.
Even so, store traffic at Tiffany could be slashed in half
on days when security is high, according to Oliver Chen, an analyst at Cowen
and Company.
"We do not know how long traffic-risk factors will
persist, but we do believe investors should be informed about this risk
factor,” CNBC cited Chen as saying in a research note.
