RAPAPORT... Bonhams sold $8.6 million (GBP 6.8 million) worth of jewelry
at an auction in London as the most expensive diamond lot went under the hammer
for $79,000 per carat.
The pear-shape, 12.08-carats, D-color, VVS1-clarity diamond
ring sold to a telephone bidder for $975,797, beating its pre-sale
upper estimate of $883,645.
The auctioneer also sold a brilliant-cut, 11.17-carat,
E-color, VVS2-clarity diamond ring for $703,129, or $61,700 per
carat. Another diamond with a step cut, weighing 21.33 carats, with fancy pink-brown
color and VVS2 clarity fetched $915,204, or $42,907 per carat.
While diamonds made up most of the more expensive items at
the auction, the top lot was a 14.13-carat Kashmir sapphire ring. The stone drew a winning bid of $1.7 million, surpassing pre-sale guidance of up to $1 million.
Bonhams’ Fine Jewellery sale was held in London December 4.
The company has scheduled auctions in New York on Tuesday and in Knightsbridge,
London, on December 12.
