RAPAPORT... The Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC) will present a seminar titled “Safe & Compliant Gem Shipping — International Trade Simplified” at the upcoming JA New York Summer Show on July 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in meeting room 1D 05-06.

The seminar will explain the procedures that govern the importation and exportation of precious stones and metals and jewelry. Speakers will include supervisory import specialist Nuccio Fera of the Port of JFK International Airport, foreign trade ombudsman Omari Wooden of the U.S. Census Bureau and JVC's president, chief executive officer (CEO) and general counsel, Cecilia Gardner.

In addition, attendees will receive an information sheet that outlines the procedures required to import and export  products through Customs using common carriers. The seminar will be sponsored by Brink’s Global Services and UPS and is free to attend. Registration is not required and a light breakfast will be offered.

The specific topics to be covered during the seminar will include:

•The Importer of Record;
•The entry of goods into the U.S.;
•The classification of goods upon Importation;
•The U.S. General System of Preferences (GSP);
•Import duties on jewelry, precious metals and precious stones;
•The liquidation process;
•Country of origin markings;
•Importation and exportation of rough diamonds;
•Export licenses; and
•Import and export bans and sanctions.

Gardner noted that "The most effective way to guarantee safe, secure and unimpeded deliveries of your parcels is to comply with the rules. Before shipping merchandise to or from the U.S., it is important to be familiar with your legal obligations. JVC’s seminar will explain the steps required to  import and export precious stones and metals, and jewelry, special rules pertaining to rough diamonds and jadeite and rubies from Burma and whether Customs duty payments are required.

“This volume of targeted import and export information has not been covered before in a single seminar," she continued. "JVC urges importers and exporters to attend the seminar and to bring questions pertaining to their businesses. JVC would like to thank Brink’s and UPS for sponsoring this important seminar.”
