Time does make a difference for diamond industry and related stocks, only 2011 was not an exceptional year for the majority of stocks the Rapaport News team follows. Of the 55 publically traded companies on the Rapaport Stock Tracker, only Gemfields International, Vaibhav Gems, Gitanjali Gems, C. Mahendra, Damiani, Walmart, Tiffany, Signet, Nordstrom, Movado Group, JCPenney, and DGSE Companies registered price gains during the year. The best stock performance in 2011 came from DGSE (up 75%) for U.S. retail, Gitanjali Gems (up 43%) for Indian retail, and Gemfields (up 52%) was the only mining company to end the year higher.
To give an example of how widespread share price drops were in 2011, just the following 13 companies registered share losses of 50 percent or more: LJ International, Man Sang, Theo Fennell, Classic Diamond, Goenka Diamond, Titan Industries, Peregrine Diamonds, Shore Gold, Stornoway Diamond, Firestone Diamonds, Mwana Africa, Namakwa Diamonds and Stellar Diamonds.
