RAPAPORT... ABN Amro’s diamond and jewelry division will become part of its trade-and-commodity finance business under a restructuring that has seen the Dutch bank appoint a new global head for its precious-stones unit.

Geert van Reisen has replaced Erik Jens (pictured), who has led ABN Amro’s diamond department for five years, effective December 1, the bank said in a statement Thursday. Van Reisen was previously the lender’s global head of strategy, risk and portfolio management for diamonds and jewelry.

The diamonds and jewelry unit “will have a great and experienced successor,” Jens said. “I’d like to thank our clients for their trust. I will continue to be involved in the financing side of the luxury sector going forward.”

Van Reisen, as interim head of the department, will report to Karin Kersten, global head of trade-and-commodity finance. That division is a “logical fit” with diamonds and jewelry, as the financing of diamonds and commodities have a lot in common, Kersten explained.

Trade-and-commodity finance is a section within ABN Amro’s commercial and institutional banking business.

ABN Amro, which is one of the biggest lenders to the global diamond industry, currently operates in Antwerp, Dubai, Hong Kong and New York.
