RAPAPORT... In a statement posted on their website, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in South Africa served its notice to strike against  De Beers Consolidated Mines after negotiations failed to reach a wage settlement.  The strike is set to officially begin on Friday.

The Commission for Conciliation, Meditation and Arbitration (CCMA), which handled the negotiations between the two parties, issued a certificate of non-resolution, which paved the way for NUM to issue intent to strike.

Negotiations broke down over disagreements on wage increases, with NUM demanding a 15 percent increase, and De Beers offering a 7.5 percent increase.  NUM claimed that the wage hike is needed due to the country’s 4.6 percent inflation rate, and its driving-up the cost of food and fuel.

Calling De Beers offer ''unacceptable,'' Peter Bailey,  NUM‘s chief negotiator at De Beers Consolidated Mines, added, ''Last year we settled at between 9.5 percent and 10 percent, now we are told 7.5 percent plus an ex-gratia once payment of R2500 ($350). We totally reject these.''

Due to the late hour, De Beers was unavailable for comment at press time.
