RAPAPORT... De Beers production rose 13 percent year on year to 9.132 million carats in the fourth quarter of 2013, Anglo American reported. Full year production grew 12 percent to 31.159 million carats.

The increase reflected improved production at the Jwaneng mine in Botswana along with higher grades at the Orapa and Venetia mines in South Africa and the Snap Lake mine in Canada.

Production at Venetia increased 57 percent compared to the third quarter due to higher volume  and ore grade as the mine recovered from pit flooding that it experienced in the second quarter.

In Botswana, the Jwaneng mine recovered from the impact of a slope failure incident that occurred in June 2012. At Orapa, the Orapa One plant returned to operation following unplanned maintenance in the third quarter.

The report did not provide separate production data for each mine focusing instead on De Beers various mining units - its Debswana joint venture in Botswana, Namdeb in Namibia, De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM) in South Africa and De Beers Canada.

In the fourth quarter, Debswana's production grew 17 percent to 6.357 million carats, while DBCM's production rose 28 percent to 1.728 million carats. De Beers Canada production increased 20 percent to 582,000 carats with Namdeb production rose 4 percent to 465,000 carats.

For the full year 2013, Debswana's production rose 12 percent to 22.707 million carats while DBCM's production grew 7 percent to 4.724 million carats. Namdeb increased production by 6 percent to 1.762 million carats and production at De Beers Canada jumped 26 percent to 1.966 million carats.
