RAPAPORT... The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has appointed Duncan Pay as vice president and chief academic officer.

Pay (pictured) will take charge of global education courses in gemology and jewelry design and manufacturing. He will replace senior vice president and chief learning officer Bev Hori, who will retire from the position in May.

“I am immensely pleased that Duncan has taken on this very important role to carry on Bev’s incredible work to establish professional standards and strive for continuous improvement through education for the gem and jewelry industry,” said Susan Jacques, the GIA’s CEO. “I have the utmost confidence that Duncan will further enhance GIA’s education offerings.”

While Pay will assume the role immediately, Hori will be responsible for the digital transformation of the GIA’s information center, as well as alumni global network engagement, until her departure.

Pay, a 20-year GIA veteran, was previously senior director of gemology-content strategy. In addition to his new role, he will continue in his position as editor-in-chief of the GIA’s journal, Gems & Gemology.
