RAPAPORT... ALROSA reported that a subsidiary, Severalmaz JSC, has started mining at the Karpinskogo-1 kimberlite pipe at the M.I. Lomonosov deposit in the Arkhangelsk region of Russia.

Karpinskogo-1 contains over 33 million carats, according to JORC reserves. The pipe is expected to process 600,000 tonnes of ore in 2014, with production set to ramp up to 2 million tonnes per year beginning in 2015. Severalmaz is set to refine and test small amounts of ore at the end of 2014 in order to approve diamond grade and adjust processing technology at the pipe.

ALROSA stressed that development of Severalmaz is an important part of its growth strategy. Severalmaz has been involved in diamond mining at the Arkhangelskaya kimberlite pipe since 2005. In 2013, Severalmaz's diamond production amounted to 500,000 carats per year. Following commissioning of the second module of the processing plant in March 2014, to increase its processing capacity, and the start of mining at Karpinskogo-1, diamond production at Severalmaz is expected to grow to 2 million carats in 2015, reaching over 5 million carats thereafter.

ALROSA's production is expected to reach 36 million carats in 2014. The company intends to increase its production to 41 million carats by 2021.
