The Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ) introduced a “one-of-its-kind” graduate program in jewelry design and manufacturing techniques in collaboration with an Indian business management school.

The IIGJ has tied up with the Welingkar Institute of Management to offer budding jewelers a three-year course that includes an introduction to management studies.

The IIGJ, a project of India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), said it is the first institute in the country to offer a complete graduate course in gems and jewelry that includes a management element.

“The gems and jewelry industry has been growing rapidly over the years due to domestic and international demand and we are on the cusp of a shortage of skilled staff,” Praveenshankar Pandya, the GJEPC’s chairman, pointed out.

The course is scheduled to start in the 2016-17 academic year.
