De Beers said it will spend up to $15.6 million (CAD 20.4 million) on hunting for diamonds in an underexplored part of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

The miner entered into an agreement wih CanAlaska, a company that has staked claims to kimberlite-style targets in the Northwestern Athabasca basin. The claims have been “optioned” to De Beers.

There is currently little exploration work in this area of the basin, the companies said. The 17,400-hectare areas is home to 75 kimberlite-style targets developed from a study carried out on behalf of the Saskatchewan Geological Survey.

“These targets fit all the geological and geophysical criteria of kimberlites,” said Peter Dasler, president of CanAlaska. “The location of the targets within a thick sequence of crustal rocks and their clustering around major structural features provides a compelling target for CanAlaska and De Beers.”
