ALROSA Discovers 241-Ct. Diamond in Yakutia

RAPAPORT... ALROSA found a 241.21-carat rough diamond at its Nyurbinsky mine
in Yakutia, one of the largest recovered in Russia.
The diamond measures 38.64 millimeters x 27.34 millimeters x
25.46 millimeters and is translucent with a grey hue. The crystal contains
graphite and sulphide inclusions and is “4 black clivage/makeable 2 color,”
ALROSA said.
The diamond is the third largest to originate from the
miner’s Nyurba Mining and Processing Division, one of ALROSA’s youngest units.
The business is home to the Nyurbinsky and Botuobinsky open-pit mines and two
alluvial placers with the same name. Its share in ALROSA’s production was 20
percent in 2015. The Nyurbinsky open-pit mine was put into operation in 2001
and had reserves of 36.9 million carats as of January 1, 2015, according to an
evaluation under the Joint Ore Reserves Committee code.
ALROSA last month reported the discovery of a 207.29-carat
rough diamond at the Zarnitsa pipe, also in Yakutia. The gem was the
largest found since open-pit mining started at the mine in 1999.
