Sotheby's Debuts Extraordinary Jewelry of Alexandre Reza

RAPAPORT... Some of the world's rarest gemstones are going on tour as part of Sotheby's "The Extraordinary Jewelry of Alexandre Reza"  public exhibition that will travel to the auction house's global offices, including stops in London, Doha and Beijing in 2014. It opens in New York first from November 2 to 14, 2013.

Paris-based Reza built his reputation as a specialist of rare gems since the 1950s.
Sotheby's, brooch, reza The exhibition showcases approximately 25 historic and contemporary examples of his work in the past 40 years. Viewers can see such items as the iconic untreated Ceylon sapphire brooch (pictured) that features a 134-carat oval sapphire mounted on a gold clip set with 14 round diamonds (17 carats in total), and a 1 carat pear-shaped diamond,  along with yellow diamonds and 14 pear-shaped sapphires (8 carats in total). .

New pieces by Alexandre's son, Olivier, include earrings with old mine Colombian emeralds set with baguette diamonds and in a perfect natural pearl necklace.

"My family and I are honored to partner with Sotheby's and share both the Alexandre Reza archives and new creations with jewelry collectors around the world," said Olivier Reza in a press release. "Carefully curated, this exhibition will showcase my father's legacy as a jeweler and the work that we create today in his honor."

The New York exhibition runs concurrently with Sotheby's "Contemporary and Impressionist & Modern Art" auctions. David Bennett, the chairman of Sotheby's jewelry division, said,  "Alexandre Reza's legacy forms an integral and important part of the history of post-war jewelry."

Alexandre Reva's jewelry house, on the Place Vendome, is still family-owned.
