India’s Diamond Trading Advances in May

RAPAPORT... India’s polished diamond exports jumped 13 percent year on
year to $1.97 billion in May, according to provisional data from the Gem &
Jewellery Export Promotion Council. By volume, polished exports surged 15
percent to 3 million carats. Polished imports soared 27 percent to $249.1
million, leaving net polished exports 11 percent higher at $1.72 billion.
Rough diamond imports leapt 15 percent to $1.52 billion and
rough exports increased 7.9 percent to $127 million, leaving net rough imports
16 percent higher at $1.4 billion. India’s net diamond account, which is
calculated as the difference between net polished exports and net rough
imports, declined 3.8 percent to $329 million.
During the month, India imported $4.5 million of rough
synthetic stones. Polished synthetic imports, meanwhile, totaled $12.5 million. |
