RAPAPORT... Sotheby’s has appointed experienced luxury executive Laurence Nicolas as head of its jewelry and watch division.

As executive vice president and global managing director of the business, Nicolas will be in charge of auctions, private sales, e-commerce, retail sales and Sotheby’s Diamonds, the company’s diamond venture. Based in New York, she will report to group CEO Tad Smith, starting February 1, the company said in a statement Wednesday.

Nicolas was previously a retail and marketing officer at Cartier. Her most recent position was at Christian Dior Couture, where she created the brand’s fine jewelry division in 2001 and added on the timepiece business in 2008.

“Our jewelry and watch businesses operate in markets much larger than the art market, and this newly created role has been designed to strengthen our cross-platform strategy and take advantage of the significant opportunity,” Smith said.
