RAPAPORT... The eighth edition of the Gem & Jewellery India International Exhibition (GJIIE) kicked-off on Thursday in the southern Indian city of Chennai with light visitor traffic, but exhibitors were hopeful that business would improve over the weekend.

''It is middle of the week and usually traffic is slow at every show on the first day,'' said Sandeep Tolia, the head of sales for domestic markets at Hari Krishna Exports. ''As compared with last year, [the organizers] have increased the [number of] stalls. The show should be good as the traffic is expected to pick up over the weekend.''

The four-day business to business (B2B) jewelry exhibition, which is held at the Chennai Trade Centre, is jointly organized by UBM India and the Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants Association (MJDMA).

''There is a growth in the number of exhibitors this year,'' said Jayantilal Challani, the president of the MJDMA. He noted that around 225 exhibitors are participating in 2012 compared with around 160 in 2011.

Challani said that exhibitors are participating from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and several other Indian cities as well as from Thailand, Italy, Turkey, Dubai, Hong Kong and China.

Sandeep Gupta, a partner at Hyderabad-based jeweler Tibarumal & Sons, which is participating in the show for the first time, added, ''We are hopeful of good business as visitor traffic is expected to improve going forward.''

The organizers expect around 12,000 to 15,000 visitors to participate in the show, which runs through February 26. K. Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu state inaugurated the show.
