Antwerp has organized a free diamond polishing course in September to meet increased skill demand. Many of the current polishers are nearing retirement age and over the next two years there will be 55 vacancies, which the local industry seeks to fill quickly. Several diamond firms supported this course, which covers basic polishing skills. Each of the companies will work with a student and commit to hiring this would-be apprentice after the course is completed successfully. Students will also further develop their skills with on the job training. ''This course stems from the ‘Antwerp Diamond Masterplan – Project 2020’ and is an initiative from HRD Antwerp, fonds voor Diamantnijverheid and AWDC,'' said, Ari Epstein, the chief executive of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre. ''It again shows the big commitment of the Antwerp diamond industry. Not only to the industry itself, but also outside the industry as this course is accessible to everyone.'' Candidates are required to send their CV to yves.bollekens-at-rvd.be, before June 22. Applicants have to succeed in an entrance examination held on June 27, which will include a.o. eye exam and various skills such as 3D visualization and accuracy, etc.
