Eid Al Fitr Spurs Jewelry Sales

RAPAPORT... Retailers were rewarded with an increase in sales during the Eid Al Fitr holiday weekend, with companies reporting a rise of about 5 percent to 20 percent compared with last year, according to Gulf News.
Several jewelry stores were quoted in the UAE's The National indicating an influx of business, including Al Romaizan Jewellery in Abu Dhabi's Marina Mall, where sales surged 15 percent. The Pure Gold Jewellers stores reported that sales increased by 10 percent to 15 percent. However, not every jeweler experienced such strong gains during this festive shopping period. Oriental Stores, a high-end watch retailer, offered that business decreased about 30 to 35 percent compared with last year's Eid. Asif Mohammed, a store worker, credited the decline to traffic issues at the mall. The crowded roadways proved problematic throughout the holiday with the Dubai police reporting 1,598 accidents during the long weekend, according to the Khaleej Times.
Several annual promotions were enticing shoppers to splurge during Eid, including the Dubai Shopping Malls Group (DSMG) promotion, Eid in Dubai, which was held with the cooperation of 18 malls. DSMG also promoted a three-month campaign, ''Summer is Dubai,'' which offers rewards for shopping. "Our campaign celebrates the essence of family togetherness and has been innovatively designed to offer shoppers prizes worth millions (in local currency). Aimed at boosting the retail sector … our promotion offers the shoppers value additions … making our promotion a major hit in the region," said Maid Majid Al Ghurair, the chairman of DSMG.
Eid Al-Fitr celebrates the end of Ramadan, a holy month in the Muslim religion.
