Bharat Diamond Bourse Installs Synthetics Detector

Press Release: The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) provided the Diamond Check machine to Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) amidst a gathering of luminaries from Indian diamond industry. The Diamond Check technology will help prevent synthetic diamonds from entering the market as natural diamonds through easier detection and help maintain consumer confidence, which is an urgent requirement to the industry worldwide.
Susan Jacques,GIA's president and CEO, Tom Moses, executive vice president and chief lab and research officer and Nirupa Bhatt, managing director for India and the Middle East represented GIA at the handover ceremony held on February 17, 2014 at the Shri S. G. Jhaveri Trading Hall in BDB. Anoop Mehta, president of BDB, Vipul Shah, chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and Bakul Mehta, chairman of Gemmological Institute of India (GII) were also present.
The Diamond Check machine will be housed as part of the Diamond Detection and Resource Centre (DDRC) which is located within the BDB premises. The DDRC enables BDB members to test their parcels without investing in the equipment.
BDB president Anoop Mehta said that detection and disclosure are the two critical elements when it comes to synthetics. The GIA device will further strengthen the DDRC and ensure that their goods are correctly classified as natural or synthetic.
Susan Jacques said, “As a non-profit institute, GIA has always worked to maintain public trust in gems and jewelry. We are already committed to the Indian industry by providing education and training services. The Diamond Check machine is another step in that direction.”
Elaborating on GIA’s efforts in developing this technology, Tom Moses said, “GIA has been researching and working extensively on the development of synthetic diamonds. The research we conduct allows us to implement the knowledge gained to develop advanced synthetic diamond detection instruments. The Diamond Check machine can detect 0.01 to 10 Carat Diamonds".
Vipul Shah, chairman of GJEPC said, “We would like to thank GIA Shah said echnology to India. This effort will foster transparency in the trade and reinforce consumer confidence”.
