RAPAPORT... Israel's Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor will establish a strategic committee to work on improving the Israeli diamond industry. On a recent visit to the Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE), Israel's minister Shalom Simhon said that the committee aims to analyze the needs of the industry, discuss obstacles  and find viable solutions.

The committee will primarily focus on ways to increase employment and increase cutting capacity, with an  emphasis on integrating various sectors. Members of the committee will include IDE's president, Yair Sahar, Israel Diamond Manufacturers Association's (IsDMA) president, Bumi Traub, Israeli Diamond Institute's (IDI) chair, Moti Gantz and diamond controller Shmuel Mordechai.

According to export data, Israel's diamond industry was responsible for 23 percent of the country's total exports in 2011 at $10.7 billion. The industry currently employs 55,000 workers based in Ramat Gan.
