RAPAPORT... The Surat Diamond Association (SDA) on Friday apprised officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) on issues that diamantaires are facing related to the cash seizures by the commission's surveillance teams ahead of the assembly election in December in Gujarat state.

In a bid to curb the circulation of ''black money'' during the forthcoming election, the ECI directed its officials to seize cash of more than $4,664 (INR 250,000) in the absence of certain documentation. However, due to this, the small and medium size diamantaires in Gujarat are facing difficulty in sending money for wages and bonuses ahead of Diwali to their workers who are employed in the interior parts of the region as ''aangadias,'' or traditional couriers, are refusing to deliver cash within Gujarat.

Dinesh Navadia, SDA’s president, and other industry executives met with the ECI officials in Delhi today to discuss the seizures of cash.

“We have met with them and listened to their views. Our rules are same for all the states but looking at the peculiar problem there we are trying to do something,” said S.K. Rudola, the secretary at the ECI. “We have kept their views before the commission. The outcome is yet to come.”

He stated that if someone has authentic documents, while carrying the large amount of cash, then there is no issue. However, if someone is facing harassment from any officer then they can directly complain to the commission, Rudola noted.
