RAPAPORT... Best Buy, Walmart and Macy’s came top in three key shopping time periods during the Thanksgiving weekend, according to data from market information company NPD Group.

Best Buy “won” the early shopper, hitting its peak at 5pm on Thanksgiving, November 26, NPD said in a statement December 11. Walmart performed the strongest at 6pm on Thanksgiving, the U.S. retail market’s busiest shopping time of the holiday. Macy’s took the peak Black Friday buyer slot, reaching a high point at 12 noon – the most popular shopping spot throughout the market that day.

Traders saw a sharper decline following the 6pm Thanksgiving peak than they did last year, NPD said. Shoppers who visited four or more stores on Black Friday slid 5 percentage points to 15 percent compared with that in 2014, with most customers who went out to shop on one of the two days visiting just one store.

The number of shoppers choosing to go to a shop on both days slumped 7 percentage points to 39 percent this year. Some 43 percent of customers made Black Friday their only shopping day – a slight increase over last year. People who elected to shop only on Thanksgiving jumped 4 percentage points to 18 percent even though many stores chose not to open on the holiday, NPD added.
