RAPAPORT... Apple’s $17,000 gold smartwatch failed to make it to its latest
range unveiled in San Francisco last week, a signal of the technology company’s
retreat from the luxury timepieces category.
“Apple is making an admission that it’s not a luxury product
in watches,” James Dowling, co-author of The Best of Time: Rolex
Wristwatches, was cited by Bloomberg as saying. “In fact, it’s making a
declaration that it’s no longer in the watch business, but that it’s in the
health-tracking business.”
The Apple Watch Series 2 is available in lightweight
aluminum, stainless steel cases or ceramic. As the 18-karat gold version is no
longer available for sale, the ceramic timepiece is now the most expensive in
the line, starting at $1,249.
The Series 2 watch is water-resistant with a 50-meter rating
for swimming and built-in GPS to enable users to run without carrying an
iPhone. The new range was launched September 7.
