RAPAPORT... The Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF) unveiled a calculator to determine the rarity of a fancy color diamond and plans to introduce “rarity certificates” for select jewelry before the end of 2016.

The Fancy Color Rarity Evaluator provides an estimate for the number of diamonds mined each year, allocating a rarity level ranging from common to super-stone, the FCRF explained. The tool was developed from five years of data collection and analysis, including supply information from mining companies and grading laboratories. It can be applied to all yellow, pink and blue diamonds based on carat weight, color, color intensity, clarity and shape.

“Since fancy color diamond rarity data had never been institutionally documented in the past, the FCRF began to systematically collect supply information from leading miners and grading labs and to analyze and process this data,” the foundation explained.

The evaluator provides additional information to grading reports which outline the physical traits of a fancy color diamond. It adds an essential tool for collectors by documenting, analyzing and processing rarity, the FCRF explained.

The FCRF plans to introduce rarity certificates for select jewelry pieces in partnership with select high-end jewelers in the fourth quarter.
