RAPAPORT... A gem-set, diamond and enamel tutti frutti bracelet by Cartier is to go under the hammer in Sotheby’s latest online sale.
The piece, which has a high estimate of $800,000, will be sold as a single lot by Sotheby’s New York in a dedicated remote auction. It features a selection of old European and single-cut, VS- to SI-clarity, F- to I-color diamonds, weighing a total of approximately 8 carats, set in a vine pattern surrounded by carved emeralds, rubies and sapphires. The seven-inch band — which is accented with emerald beads, cabochon sapphires and emeralds, and calibré-cut onyx and black enamel — went on sale Friday, with bids accepted through April 28.
The auction house has a strong history of selling Cartier’s tutti frutti pieces, which were produced during the jeweler’s Art Deco period and are defined by their use of Mughal-cut colored stones.
In 2014, it sold a similar, openwork foliate band for $2.2 million. The item — part of a 33-piece collection from Evelyn H. Lauder, auctioned in aid of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation — achieved a record for any tutti frutti bracelet by Cartier. That piece featured diamonds with a total weight of approximately 6.25 carats alongside carved emeralds and rubies, onyx beads and faceted rubies, and was set in platinum.
This latest single-lot auction will take place concurrently with Sotheby’s Fine Jewels online sale, highlights of which include a diamond bombé ring by Graff with a high estimate of $100,000, and an aquamarine and diamond brooch by Verdura valued at $25,000 to $35,000. The Fine Jewels sale is due to conclude April 29.
