The Jewish New Year is a time for reflection about who we are and what we do. The diamond trade is blessed with a product that celebrates all that is good in life. The joy of gifting, connecting and loving is the message of diamonds. The diamond and jewelry trade makes the world a better place by providing people with products that promote loving relationships.
That’s nice.
There is more to our lives and the diamond business than making money. Our diamond supply chain provides a livelihood to millions of people all over the world, particularly in Africa and India. In America, thousands of jewelers serve millions of consumers. We earn our living by making the lives of our customers happier and more meaningful.
That’s good.
Can we do more?
The diamond supply chain is a tricky business. Rough diamond mines are located in places where poor people live and have rights. Alluvial rough diamonds are randomly distributed across impoverished communities. In some instances, good companies provide benefits that help the people where diamonds are found. In other instances, bad companies hurt the people where diamonds are found.
In diamond trading centers most companies mix diamond sources, so you need to know the source of the polished diamond, not just the name of the company selling it.
When you consider the diamond supply chain, know that there are good diamonds that help people and bad diamonds that hurt people.
We must support the good diamonds and reject the bad diamonds.
There is a reason G-D gave diamonds to the poorest people in the world and made the richest desire them. The role of the diamond trade is to bridge this gap. That is Tikun Olam — Fixing the World. That is why we exist.
