EU Eyes 2018 Kimberley Process Chairmanship

RAPAPORT... The
European Union (EU) is bidding for the role of Kimberley Process vice chair in
2017, meaning it would assume chairmanship of the organization the following
year.
In a joint
proposal made at the KP intersessional meeting in Dubai last week, India would
serve as vice chair under the EU in 2018 and take on the role of chairman in
2019, India’s Ministry of Commerce & Industry said. The position is currently
held by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with Australia its vice chair and next
year’s chair.
The
cooperation would “avoid situations of conflict and provide stability to the KP
in the next crucial years to come,” said Tung-Lai Margue, head of the EU’s
delegation to the KP.
As heads
of the KP, the EU and India would aim to enhance cooperation with the United
Nations (UN) and international financial institutions, Margue proposed. They
would also explore how the KP can help implement the UN’s sustainable
development goals and renew and reinforce engagement with industry and civil society.
Under the
KP chairmanship system, one nation or delegation assumes the vice-chairmanship
for a year before automatically stepping up to chair for a further 12 months. The
European Union was last chair in 2007 with vice-chair India taking over the
following year.
