RAPAPORT... The UK’s
Prince Harry has revealed how he proposed to Meghan Markle
with a custom-designed ring featuring a center diamond from Botswana and two
more stones from his mother, Diana.
“The ring is yellow gold, because that’s [Markle’s]
favorite, and the main stone itself is sourced from Botswana,” he said in a television
interview Monday, after announcing his engagement to the American actress. “The
little diamonds either side are from my late mother’s jewelry collection, to
make sure she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”
Botswana is close to Prince Harry’s heart, as he has visited
it many times since he was a child, press reports said. He and Markle “camped
out with each other under the stars” on a recent trip to the country, according
to the London Evening Standard. The royal popped the question earlier
this month while the two of them were in the kitchen cooking roast chicken at
home in Kensington Palace, London.
London-based Cleave & Company, the official
jewelers to the Queen, created the three-stone ring, a spokesperson for the
firm confirmed. Media estimates put the center stone at about 2.5 carats.
Markle made her first public appearance since the announcement
at a press event Monday, sporting a pair of 18-karat yellow gold and opal
earrings from Canadian jeweler Birks Group.
