Press Release: The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Spring 2013 Education Quarterly is now available online and in print. The issue outlines the eLearning and on-campus gem and jewelry courses and programs available at the Institute’s 11 campuses worldwide, as well as details about GIA’s credentials and diplomas, the most recognized in the industry. Articles on emeralds, platinum and Edwardian-era jewelry included in the publication give readers a taste of what they might learn at GIA.
Created with current and prospective students in mind, the quarterly sheds light on the wide variety of careers a GIA education can lead to, and the GIA courses and programs that can set a student on a new career path. Details about the recently revamped Jewelry Design & Technology and Graduate Jeweler programs are included, as well as the Institute’s other globally recognized programs, such as the Graduate Gemologist and Accredited Jewelry Professional diplomas. An exclusive interview with Jeff Mason, a GIA graduate and gemologist at the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawnshop (setting of the television program Pawn Stars) personifies the more than 325,000 GIA alumni around the world.
The special online edition, featured on GIA’s newly revamped website, includes two educational videos:
· Echoes of the Edwardian Era takes a step back in time to the Edwardian Era (1900 – 1915), when jewelry was defined by diamonds, pearls, platinum and symmetry. “Jewelry was a preferred way to show one’s rank in society. Only the upper classes could afford it, and they advertised their wealth and position by wearing exquisite works,” said Robert Ackermann, a Jewelry Manufacturing Arts instructor at GIA in Carlsbad.
· Seeing Green: All About Emeralds leads viewers on an emerald origin expedition with industry expert Edward Boehm. Emerald – the Pantone Color of the Year for 2013 – was adored by Cleopatra and coveted by 16th century Conquistadors in South America, and can command high prices at auction today.
