RAPAPORT... Sterling Jewelers Inc. and Zale Corporation have agreed to resolve a lawsuit pending in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, named Sterling Jewelers Inc. versus Zale Corporation.

The resolution will go into effect on March 1, 2014. The terms of the settlement are confidential and will not be disclosed. The two rivals were ordered to negotiate and report progress to the court by the end of September. If an agreement had not been reached, the case was scheduled to go to trial in March.

Sterling, which is the U.S. subsidiary of the Signet Group, initially filed a lawsuit against its rival Zale in November 2012, citing the public interest, truth in advertising and the need to protect consumers from false and misleading information allegedly brought by Zale's Celebration Fire diamond's tagline: ''the most brilliant in the world." The lawsuit emerged as both companies attempted to attract shoppers during the important Christmas shopping season.
