GIA Opens Grading Laboratory in Japan

RAPAPORT... The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has opened a grading laboratory in Tokyo, Japan, marking a ninth global location.
“Bringing GIA’s diamond grading standards and research-backed lab services to such an important market will serve the public interest by supporting the Japanese gem and jewelry industry,” said GIA's senior vice president for laboratory and research, Tom Moses. “Our global network of laboratories enables GIA to remain at the forefront of gemological developments and provide the best possible service to our laboratory clients.”
The Tokyo laboratory, which began accepting diamonds for grading from clients on Monday, currently offers Diamond Dossier® and Diamond Grading Report services for D to Z diamonds up to 2.99 carats with plans to expand the menu of services offered at the facility in the coming months. The laboratory will also accept colored stones and pearls for other GIA services, which will be sent to GIA's global laboratories and returned to Tokyo for pickup.
GIA announced plans to open a gem grading laboratory in Japan one year ago, following extensive consultations with Japanese stakeholders. GIA has conducted educational programs in Japan since the 1970s, with nearly 4,000 holders of the Graduate Gemologist diploma in the country.
GIA's manager at the Tokyo laboratory, Mari Okada, said, “Providing grading services to the gem and jewelry sector where they operate is central to GIA’s practice. We are excited to open a laboratory in Tokyo to complement GIA’s long-standing educational presence in Japan.”
