Namdeb Reaches Milestone in Search for Marine Diamonds

RAPAPORT... Namdeb reported that its probe drill platform (PDP) drilled 24 holes in 24 hours some 335 meters off the coast of Namibia in November.

This is a significant milestone in exploring the marine portions of the group's mining licenses adjacent to its land based mining activities, according to Namdeb.

The PDP is a walking jack-up platform weighing 165 tons with its deck measuring 12 meters by 12 meters. It has eight footings that are 18 meters long and are designed to withstand 144 kilometer per hour winds combined with five meter ocean swells. The PDP can operate in water depths of up to seven meters in calm seas and it can drill through more than 30 meters of sediment with its 5-inch diameter reverse circulation drill. It is connected to land with an aerial ropeway system (pictured).

The construction of the PDP and ARS was completed in 2010 and the commissioning continued throughout the first half of 2011 with walking and drilling operations on the beach. The PDP began drilling in the sea in August 2011.
