Press Release: The 63rd De Beers Diamond Conference 2012 was held in the University of Warwick, Birmingham, U.K., from July 9 to 12, 2012. At this conference from India, Dr. Jayshree Panjikar and Aatish Panjikar of Panjikar Gem Research & Tech Institute (PANGEMTECH), Pune, presented two technical papers. One paper was on the “Comparative study and investigation of inclusions observed in diamonds from Wajrakarur and Majhgawan regions in India” and the other on the “Use of special oculars in objective grading standards for star and melee diamonds.”

For the past 63 years this conference  has maintained its very high standards of deliberations. Invited delegates ranged from various universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Cardiff, Wales, Warwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Harvard, Alberta, Melbourne, Michigan, Tsukuba as well as from institutions like DTC Research Center, Element Six, HRD Antwerp, GIA New York, SSEF Switzerland, Institut Max von Laue, France; Max Plank Institute, Germany; Nuclear Physics Institute, Czec Republic; Institute of Material Research Belgium, Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, Delft, the Netherlands; National Research Council of Canada and Research Departments of companies like Sumitomo, Japan and Hewlett-Packard, USA.

The conference began with a lecture by professor  Dr. Moreton Moore, University of London, on X-ray techniques for studying diamonds. Keynote speaker professor  Robert Luth, University of Alberta, spoke on the formation of natural diamond from an experimentalist’s view point. In all, 66 technical papers were presented on various scientific and technological aspects of natural and synthetic diamond. Unlike other conferences it brought together a wide range and variety of disciplines involved with diamond viz. geologists, gemologists, physicists and academicians working on fundamental science as well as technologists developing new applications of diamond.

Other keynote speakers were Christoph Becher, Universität des Saarlandes, Germany, Shinichi Shikata, Diamond Research Laboratory AIST, Japan and Hitoshi Sumiya, SEI Advanced Materials R&D Department, Japan.

Parties stressed the importance of  advancing  knowledge of defects and impurities in diamond, facilitating identification of synthetic and treated diamond, spectroscopic and microscopic characterization of diamond, syntheses of diamond, geology and genesis of diamond including geological dating of diamond. New advances in diamond technology, synthetic diamonds, color centers, diamond photonics, carbon etching, nano-diamond, wide band-gap, semiconductor and other diamond related topics were also presented.
