RAPAPORT... President Barack Obama extended a ban on the import of rubies and jade from Myanmar through an executive order issued on August 7, 2013. The renewed ban reflected the Obama administration's growing concerns regarding Myanmar's military involvement in the gems industry as well as human rights abuses against minorities despite recent democratic reforms.

The ban includes jadeite and ruby (7103 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule) and jewelry containing those gems (7113).

The executive order extended the ban as U.S. sanctions legislation against Myanmar lapsed when they came up for  annual renewal in late July.
